I would like to officially announce the kick off of American Education week for the Worthington Schools. American Education Week officially runs from November 11-17.
First commemorated in 1921, American Education Week was established by the National Education Association and American Legion in response to concerns that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit. As a result, the two organizations established "an educational week . . . observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs."
This week we will be recognizing many key people who help to support and sustain the function of our schools. We will be recognizing parents, community members, substitute teachers, Education Support Professionals and the members of the Board of Education. This is a week to celebrate our accomplishments as a public school system and reflect on our needs as we move forward.
If you read this and wonder, what can I do to celebrate? Some ideas are attached to this email. Any activities that bring more members of the public into our schools are welcomed!
